Be Still, Surrender, and Rest!

Updated: Jan 31, 2023

When I close my eyes and take deep breaths and allow your Holy Spirit to come in where it's weary and overwhelmed due to worldly circumstances, you say to me... “Be still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10.

It took me a long time to really know what “being still” meant because I was so impatient. I couldn’t sit still for one second without feeling like I wasn't being heard by God therefore, I didn’t want to waste any more time trying. I wanted to know everything on my timing, whether it was questions about my purpose, family issues and even personal issues. I drove myself crazy to the point where it forced me to sit down and be still before God.

The greatest thing about God is he won’t move another step until you return to the last step you walked with him. I’d rather return to where I left him than continue to move ahead. And it is there, where I learned to be still, surrender, and rest. Being Still helps you focus in on where you are, so that we can hear from our Lord and Savior. It’s that step back in allowing the Lord to take complete control, give insight, reassurance, comfort, and strength to keep putting one foot in front of the other one day at a time.

And in this stillness, he has showed me how to trust him and remember that I am his daughter. It’s almost as if I can feel him grab me by the hand and tell me to relax and just sit. He’ll say let’s talk and discuss those things you’ve always wanted to talk about and let me give you my insight that will give you peace that surpasses your understanding. See, his understanding is greater than ours when we feel we should be where we thought we should or have what we thought we would have. I gave all that back to him to just go to the very place that mattered the most and to just sit, surrender and rest.

Maybe you’ve forgot what it feels like to be still before him and you rush ahead a lot, or maybe you’re like me who has been impatient and don’t give yourself time nor give God the chance to speak. Well let’s slow down and rest awhile and know that you’re not alone. Give yourself time to be still to listen again, to re-focus on purpose, and on your dearest intimate relationship with Christ. We may want to move and move, but God puts us in seasons to sit quietly and receive. Sit quietly and believe.

When you think about “Being Still” What are your first thoughts? How can you put “Being Still” into practice?
